Brachioplasty is a surgical procedure aiming to reduce arm volume by removing the excessive skin and fat in that area. Most common candidates are patients with excessive weight loss or elder people wanting to reshape loose skin affects which do not respond to regular workouts and diet.
Also, in certain number of patients with regular weight, the upper part of arms have a natural disproportion to the rest of the body, so they need a corretive surgery.
Preparation
As the surgery is done in general anesthesia, all tests recommended by the physician and anesthesiologist are necessary – those are mostly laboratory examinations with internist check-in and ECG.
Surgery
Surgical approach can be done through armpit or along the upper arm, and in some cases both. Excessive skin and under skin fat tissue are removed and in some cases liposuction is necessary, so both techniques are made during the procedure.
Recovery and results
Stiches are removed between the 10th and the 14th day.
During recovery period, minimum 2 weeks, it is important to avoid hard physical activities and wear a special medical compression garment.
The result can be noted immediately but it is considered final when the use of the compression garment is over.
Possible complications
In rare cases keloidal scars can occur in patients prone to it, while swelling, bruises and temporary arm numbness are common.
Mr sc. med. Vladimir B.
