Ear correction

Sometimes the ear can have a prominent or protruding position on the side of the head and the only possible way to correct this ‘problem’ is the surgery. Earlobe correction shouldn’t be done before the age of 7, as it is considered that at this age the earlobe cartilage has finished its formation.

Preparation

The intervention proceeds in local anesthesia and requires all tests recommended by the surgeon and the anesthesiologist – in most cases laboratorial analysis.

Surgery

The procedure is consisted of removing the excessive skin behind the ears and reshaping the cartilage of the earlobe in order to gain better shape and angle between the earlobe and the head.

Recovery and results

During the first 7 days, the patient needs to wear a big bandage that shouldn’t be removed. A few hours after the surgery, it is possible to feel some pain in the incision part or headache that can be treated with analgetics. During the first 10 days of the recovery, it is important that patient sleeps on the back without turning to a side. It is possible to experience troubles with hearing or have murmur in ears due to cotton used for immobilization. Ten days after the surgery, stitches are being removed and it is important to avoid any ear retraction during the following month. When the big bandage is removed after the 7 days period, the next 7 days the patient must wear a head band day and night, followed by 2 more weeks with head band only at nights. The result can be seen immediately and the tightness of the ear will possibly remain strong in the next few months, until everything sets down. 2-3 months after the surgery the patient will notice the final difference, and this correction especially affects children and teenagers because it directly affects their self-esteem.

Possible complications

Temporary swelling and, in rare cases, bruises and hematoma might appear.
