Breast reduction

Breast reduction is a surgery when part of glandular and fat tissue are removed, together with the excessive skin in order to reduce breast volume and create a better position and appearance.

Breast reduction is usually necessary in patients with naturally large breasts, and in patients who experience breast enlargment due to obesity or after pregnancy.

As big breast due to their weight cause complications, this problem cannot be considered as aesthetic only.

Preparation for breast reduction

As the surgery is done in general anesthesia, all tests recommended by the surgeon and the anesthesiologist are required – usually are laboratory tests with internist examination and ECG.

Ultrasound and mamography are also required.

Breast reduction surgery

The surgery itself lasts 2-4 hours and excessive skin, glandular and fat tissue are removed and nipples repositioned in the desired place.

There are 3 possible approaches depending on patients needs – nipple position, excessive skin, fat tissue, gland position…

Technique with “anchor” incision (inverted T) implies that the scar will have 3 components: circular areola part, vertical on the lower breast part 5-8 cm long and horizontal in the submamal fold 5-10cm.

Vertical technique implies that the scar will have only 2 components: circular areola part and vertical on the lower breast part.

Periareolar technique implies that there will be only one scar – circular around the areola.

Recovery and results after breast reduction

After the surgery it is required to wear a special bra during at least 4 weeks. Stitches are removed between the 10th and the 14h day, and harder activities and heavy carrying is prohibited at least in the first month.

Result are noted immediately as far as reduced breast volume and better positioning are concerned, but the final result is expected after a few weeks to few months when the swelling entirely disappears, and the skin and tissue take their final shape.

Scars will fade gradually in the following months.

Possible complications

As eventual complications swelling and bruises may appear, temporary hyper sensibility or numbness, possible asymmetry, as well as temporary wrinkling on the areola which disappear with time.

Necrosis and loss of breastfeeding possibility are extremely rare complications.
